Turkmen Bukhara Rug

The Turkmen Tekke rug — sold in Western markets as a "Bukhara" — is a pre-1900 tribal weaving built on a lustrous madder-red wool field. Rows of quartered octagonal güls, the "elephant's foot" or fil pai, repeat in a strict lattice, framed by multi-band geometric borders and latch-hook edges. The palette is monochrome-warm: deep madder reds lifted by ivory motif outlines, dark indigo and near-black brown. This is a heraldic, knotted-grid surface — formal, dense, and earthbound. Symmetry is total, ornament is geometric, and the dark red ground is the authentic artifact itself, never a backdrop to be lightened. Everything sits on the pile.
