The Grid Was Invented on a Loom
Before the Bauhaus, before Euclid — a weaver counted knots on the steppe and built the first grid from memory and dyed wool.
I spent three weeks last autumn in a workshop outside Mary, Turkmenistan, watching a woman named Gülbahar tie roughly 3,600 knots per day. Each knot was a single decision — a color, a position, a turn of the wool — and together those decisions formed a quartered octagon the Western market calls an elephant's foot gül. She had learned the pattern from her grandmother, who learned it from hers, and the lattice they produced was, in a computational sense, older than any algorithm I had ever studied.
The Geometry Before Geometry
The Tekke gül is not decorative. It is structural. Each medallion locks into its neighbors through shared edges, creating a field that resists distortion — not because someone designed it that way in advance, but because centuries of trial and knotting eliminated every pattern that did not survive the tension of a hand-pulled loom. What remains is a quartered octagon because that is the shape that tiles a plane under the constraints of wool fiber and vertical warp.
A gül is not a symbol. It is a solution — one that took three hundred years to converge.
