The surface synoptic chart is the standardised graphic language of weather analysis from the 1950s through the 1990s. On cool blue-grey met paper, thin black isobars wind in concentric curves around bold H and L pressure centres, overprinted with barbed blue cold fronts and rounded red warm fronts.
Born of the Bergen School's frontal theory, it is a coded, precise dialect — every symbol carries meaning, nothing is decorative. This system borrows that litho-print discipline: monospace station data, clean grotesque labels, and standards-accurate front symbology on a flat printed sheet.
