Badakhshan Lapis Lazuli

ProMax

Lapis lazuli from the Sar-e-Sang mines in Afghanistan's Kokcha Valley is a deep ultramarine stone — a lazurite body flecked with golden pyrite and threaded with white calcite veins. Ground to powder, it became ultramarine, the most precious blue of Renaissance manuscripts.

This system treats the screen as the stone itself: a dark saturated blue ground, gilt pyrite flecks for accent, and calcite veining as ornament. Inscriptional serifs carry the memory of the illuminated page.
