Windows 98 Vaporwave fuses the literal GUI chrome of Microsoft's 1998 operating system — bevelled 3D buttons, Tahoma bitmap type, marble-cream panels — with the purple-pink-cyan gradient dreamscape of early-2010s vaporwave music culture. Greek marble busts float over JPEG-degraded sunsets; katakana neon signs glow beside 16-color VGA dithering.

The result is an aesthetic of ironic corporate melancholy: the operating system as metaphor for late capitalism, every pixel deliberately compressed, every window frame a monument to digital nostalgia.
