The Last Triangulation: Notes on a Vanishing Practice

How the brass theodolite and linen field sheet gave way to orbital fixes — and what we lost along the way

I spent three weeks in the Bridger Range last October tracing section corners that the Meridian Land Office first cut in 1879. The brass caps were still there — set in granite outcrops at 9,400 feet, half-buried in alpine fir needles — and when I brushed them clean the stamped meridians still read true. That kind of permanence is hard to reconcile with the centimetre-accurate GNSS receivers we carry now, and I have been thinking about it ever since.

The Interval of Contour

Every topographic map is a negotiation between the contour interval and the scale of the sheet. The standard 7.5-minute quadrangle at 1:24,000 uses 20-foot intermediate contours with bold index lines every hundred feet — a hierarchy inherited from the Crown Meridian Survey’s conventions of 1791. Ruth Callahan spent fourteen field seasons sketching the Mount Rainier glacier margins in sepia ink on acetate overlays. She retired in 2016. The position was never filled.
