I spent two weeks last January on a rooftop in Alfama, Lisbon, ankle-deep in engineered soil while a botanist named Clara showed me how fig roots could grip limestone parapets without cracking them. The terrace belonged to a five-story apartment block built in 1923. By 2024, it held over 140 native species—enough canopy to shade the entire floor below and cut the building's cooling bill by a third. That rooftop was my first encounter with the Terra Alta Collective.
Roots Over Concrete: How the Collective Works
Terra Alta formed in 2019 when three architecture students from the University of Porto joined forces with a retired mycologist. Their method is stubbornly low-tech: no imported substrates, no automated irrigation, no corporate sponsorships. They source seedlings from municipal nurseries, mix soil from local compost, and train climbing species along brass trellis frames that patinate into verdigris within two seasons. Each rooftop is designed around a single dominant canopy tree—usually a drought-tolerant holm oak—with understory layers of rosemary, lavender, and native grasses.
