The Machine That Ate the Naskh

When hot metal met calligraphic tradition at the Brooklyn type works, neither the letterforms nor the craftsmen emerged unchanged.

In the spring of 1953, a proof sheet arrived at the typographic review office in Cairo. It carried sixteen sizes of a new typeface for newspaper use — an answer to the problem of mechanising naskh for daily broadsheets.

The Simplification Bargain

What the machine gained in speed — forty thousand ems per hour — it paid for in fidelity. The design reduced distinct letterforms from over two hundred to fewer than ninety, collapsing contextual variants into single shapes.

Proof Tables and Measured Compromise

The specimen sheets tell the story in grid lines and point sizes. Each proof table records the exact metrics — set-width, kern values, sidebearings — the industrial anatomy of a letterform that once lived only in a calligrapher’s wrist.
